AI Writes the Code. You Still Own the Decision.
Everyone in tech is talking about AI pair programming like it's the end of the coding profession. It isn't. But it is a massive trap for engineers who haven't figured out where the tool ends and their judgment begins.
I use AI assistants every day. They are genuinely useful. But I have watched a quiet, dangerous trend accelerate over the last year: engineers are delegating their architectural thinking to a language model, then shipping whatever comes out the other side.
That is not senior engineering. That is being a human clipboard.
The Verbosity Problem
AI code generators have a fundamental bias: they over-generate. Ask for a function to validate an email, and you will receive a 60-line class with an interface, a factory method, four private validators, a custom exception hierarchy, and a unit test stub. The code is rarely wrong. But it is almost always excessive.
This matters because every line of code you ship is a line of code someone has to maintain. A codebase inflated by AI-generated patterns has enormous surface area with no soul behind it. When a bug appears 18 months later in that 60-line email validator, the engineer debugging it has no idea why the factory method exists. Because the original author doesn't know either. They accepted the output and moved on.
The Context Gap
Here is what AI cannot see: your constraints.
It doesn't know that your team has a strict 80ms server response time budget and the elegant recursive solution it just generated will collapse under real database load. It doesn't know that your company has a policy against third-party utility libraries because of past supply-chain security incidents. It doesn't know that one specific legacy endpoint must remain stateful because a 10-year-old enterprise client hardcoded their integration against it.
A language model is trained on the internet's code. The internet's code does not know your system.
When an AI generates an abstraction for your shared API client, it sees the local file context. You see the 40 other services that consume it, the three teams that will be affected by any interface change, and the six-month migration window you already promised in a planning meeting. That context is irreplaceable. It lives in your head, in your Confluence pages, and in the scar tissue of your past production incidents.
Human in the Loop is Not a Safety Feature. It's the Job.
The "Human in the Loop" concept comes from AI safety research. The idea is simple: keep a human in the decision chain so that automated systems don't run without oversight.
Applied to engineering, it means this: you are not a code acceptance machine. AI can be the fastest, most junior pair programmer you have ever worked with. But you are the Principal. You define the architecture. You set the constraints. You decide what gets merged.
Never accept a code suggestion you cannot immediately explain to a colleague. If you can't read it and own it, revert it.
Use AI to eliminate boilerplate. Use it to explore syntax you've forgotten. Use it to draft a first pass at a unit test file. But the moment it starts generating multi-layer abstractions or proposing design patterns you weren't already considering, stop. That's not a shortcut. That's someone else's opinion injected into your system with zero accountability.
The engineers who will thrive in the next decade are not the ones who can prompt the best. They are the ones who understand systems deeply enough to know exactly what the AI got wrong.
